So what do you call a female werewolf?

There are several gendered words for werewolves. Werewolf, he-werewolf, she-werewolf, werewolfess... but one feminine form that has caught on recently is "wifwolf." But why?

Reimagining the planetouched

After reading many interesting sourcebooks my idea of the planetouched has expanded considerably. In my holistic cosmology, the planes are inhabited with civilizations little different from the material plane. The inhabitants of those planes are much like the races on the material plane, and they are truly native to those planes rather than being immigrants or something similarly silly. Whether a character is native to another plane, or descended from someone native to another plane, I refer to them all as planetouched.

So what do you call a winged unicorn or a horned lion?

A recent addition to our cultures' repertoire of fantastic beasts is the winged unicorn or horned pegasus, a hybrid of pegasus and unicorn. There is no standardized name for this fantastic beast, so what exactly do you call it? (Beyond the obvious, of course!)

Ecology of the Griffin

The griffin as described in the monster manual is fairly boring in comparison to its portrayal in the medieval bestiaries from which it originates. Here are some ideas for making griffins more interesting and closer to their mythological origins.

Dullahans are fairies, not undead

The dullahan, or headless horseman as others may know it, never appears in the D&D books as far as I know. It does appear in Pathfinder... as an undead servant of the archfiends. I prefer to present them as the fairies they are in Irish folklore. More information below the break. UPDATED 11/13/2018

Antimagic in a setting made of magic

My campaign setting and associated cosmology, which I have not yet given a name to, operates on the conceit that magic and nature are one and the same. More specifically, nature is a subset of magic as I outlined in a previous post on the "winds of magic." This means that antimagic effects and spells like detect magic cannot work the same way, since there are no magical effects separate from non-magical effects.

Ecology of serpentfolk, part 2: the saurian race

This post will briefly explain the origins of the reptilian humanoids in the fantasy world. The various lizardfolk, serpentfolk, gatorfolk, tortoisefolk, etc are all scions of the ancient saurian race.

Colours of Magic for 5e

It recently came to my attention that the Colours of Magic series that I use to inform my world building was revised for 5e. The colors underwent a number of changes, in some cases being completely redefined. Details below the break.

Power sources for divine strike

The topic of this post eventually spiraled out of my control, but if you want a quick summary...

I covered the following two points: 1) the inconsistent relationship between the energy planes, feywild, shadowfell, and alignment. 2) an idea that clerics get their damage by channeling from energy gates located on specific planes. If moved to the wrong plane they will cause problems the PCs need to fix.

Pathfinder 2nd edition is confirmed

Long ago I switched to 5e because 3e had too many issues I did not like. Lo and behold, Pathfinder 2nd edition is trying to compete with 5e. This is not that surprising, considering that Unchained and Starfinder were previously used as testing beds for this exact sort of thing. Hopefully it will fix the issues I had with 3e, which are many, but at this point I am cautiously optimistic. I might switch over, but only if the new edition fixes the problems I had with it, or is easy to house rule, or if my favorite 3pp (e.g. the alternate martial and magic systems by Dreamscarred and Drop Dead) are converted to it.
