Fantasy space travel primer

At I explained previously, one of the key changes in my cosmology is merging the Ethereal, Astral and Faerie planes. Furthermore, this plane serves a dual role as outer space: space travel may allow travelers to visit other planes as though they were planets or islands on the sea!

I was inspired by planar and space travel as suggested in Legends & Lairs: Portals & Planes, Blood & Treasure, and Finwicket's Bestiary: Along the Faerie Path. However, this isn't to suggest that all planes behave as planets: they may well be flat, infinite in size or bend space in strange ways. Even otherwise mundane solar systems may exhibit fantastic properties like floating continents, geocentric orbits or hollow planets. It even possible to visit the night sky, which is a solid surface that surrounds the universe named the Vault of Stars (cf. Classic Play: The Book of the Planes). The Vault is dotted with stars as the name suggests, which are quite different from suns.

Since my cosmology doesn't make an arbitrary distinction between mundane and magical phenomena, I will be adopting the fantasy space travel mechanics from the 3.x/d20/OGL 3pp source book Aether & Flux: Sailing the Traverse. Here, outer space is filled with a background field known as "aether" (aka the fifth element) and sails treated with "flux" will propel ships through this medium.
