Ecology of serpentfolk, part 2: the saurian race

This post will briefly explain the origins of the reptilian humanoids in the fantasy world. The various lizardfolk, serpentfolk, gatorfolk, tortoisefolk, etc are all scions of the ancient saurian race.

The following information is based on the Sarrukh of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, the Sli’ess of Slavelords of Cydonia, the serpentfolk of Call of Cthulhu, the dinosaurs of Nephilim: Revelation, and the "root races" of Theosophy.

The saurian race arose during the age of the dinosaurs, and was the third root race overall (after the shoggoths in the age of terror and the hivers in the age of monsters). They worshiped the moon as their mother (by associating lunar cycles with shedding skin), built a great civilization of "cathedral forests" on Atlantis (yes, that Atlantis) and undertook a eugenics program. Unlike the policies of racial purity which characterized certain human regimes, the saurian race did not believe in an ideal. Instead, they took inspiration from the wasps, bees, ants and termites. They bred themselves to better fulfill the obligations of their professions, which developed into a biological caste system. Unlike the castes of the hivers, these castes were bloodlines.

In fact, the saurian race was the first race to achieve a humanoid body plan. This body plan reverberated through the morphic fields, leading to it being independently developed by other species in the future. This became something of an ideal to the saurian race: the more refined a bloodline was then the more humanoid it appeared. This belied the instability of their bloodlines: if individuals of different castes were to have children, these outcaste children would not be a mix of their parents. Instead, outcastes would display bizarre mutations as a throwback to the ancestral saurian race.

Atlantis was the capital of the known world at the time, and remained that way even into the age of mammals. When the primitive humans appeared, they were enslaved by the saurian race. At the height of their civilization the saurian race created a new moon in the sky, a black moon christened "Lilith," which would magnify the pleasures of their now decadent civilization. Instead, the black moon was unstable and collapsed into a skein of asteroids and dust now rechristened the "Serpent Moon." In the process, the membranes of reality became thin enough to allow the mysterious aboleth egress into the world. Their origin is barely known, but as soon as they arrived in numbers they went to war with the saurian race. This war destroyed Atlantis in a great Deluge, transformed the human slaves into the gillmen, and scattered the saurian race to the corners of the world. Ultimately, all the reptilian races of the fantasy world are descended from the survivors of the saurian race.
