Reimagining the planetouched

After reading many interesting sourcebooks my idea of the planetouched has expanded considerably. In my holistic cosmology, the planes are inhabited with civilizations little different from the material plane. The inhabitants of those planes are much like the races on the material plane, and they are truly native to those planes rather than being immigrants or something similarly silly. Whether a character is native to another plane, or descended from someone native to another plane, I refer to them all as planetouched.

"Planetouched" is a generic term for humanoid races originating from planes other than the material, and descendants thereof. It is ethnocentric and the planetouched do not really use it themselves. (In rules terms, they all have the planetouched tag.)

A given planetouched character may be descended from a marriage or pact with spirits, altered by exposure to radiation or toxins, or simply extraplanar tourists. Various sourcebooks, such as Secrets of the Planes: Planar RacesChildren of the PlanesLegends & Lairs: Mythic RacesDragonstar: Galactic RacesThe Traveler's Guide to the Elemental Plane of FireRaces of Renown: A Guidebook to the Planetouched, and Dark Roads & Golden Hells, have introduced a wide variety of planetouched, far too many to explain in one short post.

Although there are a wide variety of planetouched, they may be sorted into a few basic categories depending on their plane of origin. The aasimars come from the upper planes, tieflings come from the lower planes, maxims come from the planes of order, warplings come from the planes of discord, and elems come from the inner and transitive planes.

Elems are a special case because they are basically a grab-bag of planetouched that could not be fit into the other four categories. In essence, they are not associated with any particular alignment. They include races from the planes of air, earth, fire, water, astral, shadowfell, radiance, vault of stars and oddly enough the material plane.
