Ecology of Chaosiic aka Ei'risai

The ei'risai originally appeared in The Iconic Bestiary: Classics of Fantasy by Lion's Den Press as an open game content substitute for the slaad which are considered product identity of Wizards of the Coast. The name chaosiic was applied by their reprint in Forgotten Foes by Tricky Owlbear Publishing. This post will discuss the chaosiic in terms of Stormbringer's order and chaos conflict, not the Dungeons & Dragons alignment table as I consider the latter nonsensical.

Also called ei'risai (after the goddess Eris Discordia), the chaosiic are one of the many races that inhabit the realms of chaos and answer to the Chaos Lords. In their natural environment, chaosiic are whirling self-sustaining vortexes of desire that flit through the formless waves of the realms of chaos. When they enter the orderly universe, they are forced to take on shapes that reflect a patchwork of the living creatures that inhabit Midgard. This is something they detest immensely and find extremely unpleasant, but they are willing to put up with the indignity in order to wage war against order.

Although their appearance in Midgard often heralds mayhem and suffering, they do not revel in it like some of their demonic peers. One of the key differences between an invasion of demons and an invasion of chaosiic is that the later are concerned with attacking the laws of orderly reality rather than the people living in it. They believe that by removing the restrictions of those pesky physical laws that keep your lungs inside your body and prevent the skies from raining hot chocolate, you will be much happier with the results. They do not understand that humans need those laws to avoid melting into puddles of goop.

The highly corrosive cacoastrum (the stuff of chaos) runs in the veins of the chaosiic and seeps from their pores as an oily substance. If it enters a wound, such as from the claws of a chaosiic, the subject will be infected with an illness known as "pan-demoniac corruption." The symptoms are highly variable: the patients might develop lesions that leak more cacoastrum, start mutating as their physiology is warped, and other unpleasant fates. The end result is always the same: the patient dies or dissolves and a chaosiic bursts from their remains, or they transform into a chaosiic while still alive. The chaosiic themselves consider this a great gift that should be shared with those whom they consider the oppressed victims of order.

At least in Midgard, chaosiic will become larger and more powerful with the more offspring they produce. Five such stages have been tentatively identified: lesser, medial, greater, master and ancestor. The quota needed to advance has never been determinedassuming that it even follows a pattern at all. While most newborn chaosiic will be of the lesser variety, sometimes the attributes of the host will make them stronger.

It is possible to reason with chaosiic, at least for a time, and even convince them to lend assistance with some kind of venture. They are always happen to have fun, assuming you can sufficiently explain to them your idea of fun. The weaker chaosiic may be quite scatterbrained and whimsical at times, so it is easy even for those unaware of their nature to persuade them. However, all chaosiic are quite dangerous and those who underestimate them do so at their own peril.
