5e has not fixed the martial/caster disparity, because it was about utility not damage

I often hear 5th edition being commended for solving the martial/caster disparity. This patently false and misunderstands the disparity argument in the first place. Here's why...

While 5th has edition has toned down the raw power of casters in combat, it has not changed the fact that casters have vastly more utility than martials. Martials are pretty much useless for anything except hitting things, whereas casters may inflict status effects, manipulate the environment, fast travel over obstacles, heal injuries, raise the dead and so forth. The only way to solve this is to either remove the laundry lists of spells that casters have access to (such as by forcing them to specialize into narrow but flavorful fields a la Spheres of Power or Colours of Magic) or dial up the capabilities of martials to weeaboo fightan magic (a la Path of War or Spheres of Might) so they may keep up.
